SUSTAINABLE PEST MANAGEMENT
(2° year - 1° period 2017-18 - 6CFU)
Aim of the course is to provide general knowledge on biocenotic interactions of animal species in natural and agricultural ecosystems as well as on the main biocontrol agents of plant pests; to provide theoretical and practical concepts on natural enemies rearing as well as on their field application strategies. Systematics and biology of the main entomophagous groups; natural enemies mass rearing and field applications; microbial and genetic control; insect-plant interaction and plant resistance mechanisms; elements of agroecology; natural control and biocontrol applications in agroecosystems; laboratory identifications of the main natural enemies and field excursions for case studies.
APPLIED ENVIRONMENTAL PLANT PATHOLOGY

(2° year - 1° period 2017-18 - 6CFU)

The course aims to increase the knowledge regarding the biological control of plant pathogens in pre- and post- harvest environments. Particular attention will be paid to the selection strategies on the antagonists, their mode of action and potential applications to major crops and vegetables for the containment of the most significant pathogens in the rhizosphere, phyllosphere and in post-harvest. Strategies of integrated and biological control. Selection of antagonistic microorganisms and mechanisms of action. Production and formulation of commercial products. Induction of resistance. Substances of natural origins. Repressive soils. Risk assessment. Models of biological control against pre- and post- harvest diseases of fruits, vegetables and forest plants.

PROTECTED CULTIVATION
(2° year - 1° period 2017-18 - 6CFU)
The course is aimed at training specialists capable to analyse problems and evaluate possible options to get production from crops produced under modified micro-climatic conditions. These figures will be able to put into practice the skills acquired with the purpose of planning and management of out of season production processes through the use of appropriate protective equipment and suitable production techniques The protected cultivation in Italy and in the world . general and historical figures, diffusion and economic importance. Presupposition and objectives of protected cultivations . biological: the needs of the crops; . environmental: the climate and its variations; agronomic: quantity and quality of production, stability of yields. The microclimate under protected cultivation and its effects on crop response. Classification, agronomic meaning and management of mean, techniques and structures of protection. Choice of species and

cultivars. Production scheduling. The most significant aspects of the agronomic technique under protected environment: . soil preparation and interventions to change its characteristics; . plant pruning and training; . plant growth regulators; . growing media; . soilless cultivation. Specific aspects on the greenhouse cultivation of tomato, melon, chrysanthemum, poinsettia.

MEDITERRANEAN TREE CROPS
(2° year - 1° period  2017-18 - 6CFU)
The course intends to give knowledge on the cultivation of the main fruit tree species, with particular reference to those present in the Mediterranean area Arboriculture general notions: cultivar, clone. Clonal selection, cross-breeding, mutagenesis. Genetic and health certification. Criteria for classification of fruit trees. Monographic treatment of the following species: pome fruits (Apple and pear), stone fruit (apricot, cherry, peach, plum), nuts (almond, hazelnut, pistachio, carob, walnut), fruit (pomegranate, prickly pear), subtropical fruit trees (anona, avocado, mango) according to the following: origin and systematic framework; spread in Italy and in the world; fruiting and flowering biology; criteria for classification of cultivars, varieties and genetic improvement goals; needs and environmental vocation; propagation and rootstocks; pruning; spacing; soil managment and alternative techniques, nutrition, irrigation. Ripening and harvesting indices. Notions: citrus industry, olive growing and viticulture, arboriculture for wood and ornamental trees.
SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF ANIMAL PRODUCTION SYSTEM
(2° year - 1° period 2017-18 - 6CFU)
Aim of the course is to deepen the students’ understanding of the management of large and small ruminants and swine to guarantee high quality products Dairy cow management: reproductive efficiency evaluation; organic animal production; small ruminant management in Mediterranean areas: intake, herbage selection, pasture management, stocking rate; traceability of animal feeding; spectrocolorimetric procedures to measure phenols and oxidative stability in animal products; Gas-chromatographic technologies to determine fatty acid composition in animal products

VEGETABLE PRODUCE
(1° year - 1° period 2016-17 - 6CFU)
To provide the knowledge to evaluate and to exploit wild and cultivated species of interest as vegetables grown in Sicily to use to prepare typical dishes. Will be analyzed the health traits  of vegetable produce. To know the several health compounds of different vegetable produce and the cultivar/genotypes of interest for their high biosynthesis of nutraceuticals. To Improve the knowledge related to the good practices for producing and for processing traditional vegetable produce.
Vegetable produce of the most representative crops, variation of  the  main  produce  characteristics  in  relation  to  the commercial  and  traditional  genotypes/landraces  utilized, quality characteristics of in relation to the types/species, bioactive compounds of the produce representative of the  wild and cultivated species utilized as vegetables, vegetable processing techniques, grown methods and technics  of interest of interest for increasing nutraceutical produce and increase their long shelf life, produce and process innovation to support vegetable productive chains.

GIS AND REMOTE SENSING

Provide expertise for the development of professional and disciplinary skills in new technologies for the land and the environment, by means of concepts, methods and tools for the modern management of spatial information.Will be provided with theoretical knowledge related to Geographic Information Systems and knowledge needed to extract environmental information from remote sensing images to use in Geographic Information Systems.The course will also provide knowledge on the use of GIS software (ArcGIS from ESRI, QGIS) for the management of geographic data of vector and raster, the performance of spatial analysis as well as data thematic representation and print.

The concept of georeferencing. The data model. The concept of topology. The DBMS. The analysis of the data. Spatial analysis and analysis based on attributes. The thematic representation. RESTORATION OF DEGRADED AREAS TO GREEN
(1° year 2016-17 - 6CFU)
Provide  the knowledge student need for landscape planning, or for restoring degraded areas, and for chose the best species and agronomic techniques to use fro restoring degraded areas,  with particular attention to the Mediterranean ones.
Analysis of the characteristics of the degraded sites and of the effects of sub-optimal environmental conditions (osmotic stress, pollution contaminants, marginal soil, etc.) on the plant growth and development. SOIL CONSERVATION AND DESERTIFICATION CONTROL
(2° year - 1° period 2017-18 - 6CFU)
The aims of the course are to enable students to understand and use the appropriate agronomic and environmental knowledge and methodologies for soil conservation and combating desertification focusing in Mediterranean agro-ecosystems in a context of land, environment, and landscape conservation. Course scope and approach, desertification, its causes and why it matters; Agricultural and agro-ecosystems principles and basic concepts; Agronomic concept of fertility; Role of organic matter, plants and soil microorganisms for soil conservation; characteristics of the Mediterranean Climate. Causes and factors that influence the phenomenon of desertification; Loss of soil fertility; Erosion, compaction, salinisation, sodification; indicators of the desertification process; general mitigation measures; Conservation agriculture; use of poor quality water for irrigation; Soil protective function of vegetable; elements of forestation. Analysis of case studies.
VALUING NATURAL CAPITAL AND ECOSYSTEM SERVICES

To supply conceptual and practical skills to assign sound economic value to non-market environmental goods, ecosystems services, and landscape. Goals of economic valuation. Public goods. Principles of welfare economics. The Total Economic Value paradigm. General overview of economic valuation methods. Valuation methods based on revealed preferences: the travel cost method (single sites and multiple sites approaches). The hedonic price method. The defensive behavior and damage cost method. Valuation methods based on stated preferences: contingent valuation and choice experiments. Secondary methods: the Benefit Transfer approach . The environmental damage estimates in the European courts. The Equivalence Analysis. Examination of selected valuation case-studies.
