Giovanna Tropea Garzia, born in Catania on 03/03/1960, obtained with honors her MS in Agricultural Sciences at the University of Catania in 1985. Her dissertation was about a research conducted at the Institute of Entomology about "Biological and integrated control of Tetranychus urticae Koch on strawberry in field and in protected crops".
Upon graduation, she continued her research and collaboration with the same institute as a contractor, mainly for research projects related to biological and integrated control of pests in protected and open field horticultural crops.
In February 1990 she worked as a technical-scientific collaborator at the same Institute, collaborating with the Chairs of Agricultural Acarology and Agricultural Entomology as well; in the meantime, she also conducted some research in laboratory as well as field studies on the main harmful arthropods of protected crops and on their natural antagonists.
Concerning the scientific activity and education, Dr. Giovanna Tropea Garzia attended several training courses organized by CEE in collaboration with IOBC (International Organization of Integrated and Biological Control). In 1991 she got a specialization grant at the INRA of Antibes (France), where she refined her studies on biological control.
As researcher since 2001 at the University of Catania (Italy), she currently works for the Department of Agriculture, Food and Environment; she gives classes of Agricultural Acarology, Zoology, Agricultural Parasitology and Animal Parasitology of plants, Methods of protection of Mediterranean agroecosystem from pests, General agricultural Entomology and Pararasitology at the University of Catania. The activity of her research, documented by numerous scientific papers, mainly covers aspects of biology and biological and integrated control of agricultural pests. She participated to several projects of national research launched by the Department of the University of Catania. Among these projects, she monitored the PRIN Projects (2004 and 2007) supported by MIUR (Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research). It also currently deals with aspects related to the invasive amborsia beetle Xylosandrus compactus, recently found in Italy.
