Brief

Antonio Gugliuzzo is a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Catania, Italy. He earned the PhD degree in “Agricultural, Food and Environmental Science” on November 2022 cum summa laude with the additional certification of "Doctor Europaeus", discussing a doctoral thesis entitled "Development of new tools for sustainable management of non-native ambrosia beetles". His thesis was awarded by the Italian Association of Scientific Societies in Agriculture (AISSA) as best PhD thesis in 2022-2023. Previously, Antonio earned a Master's degree in Agricultural Science and Technology LM69 (May 2017) at the University of Catania, Italy. He conducted research activities at several Italian and foreign institutions, acquiring numerous skills in multiple aspects of general and applied entomology, ecology, toxicology and agronomy. His early research activities focused on the development of rearing techniques for invasive insect pests and their natural enemies (predators and parasitoids) and the writing and validation of experimental protocols concerning insect exposure to toxicants, i.e., insecticides, botanicals, microbials, etc. More recently, Antonio implemented his expertise through field and laboratory studies aimed at evaluating the biology, ecology, multi-trophic interactions and sustainable management strategies targeting several invasive insect pests and their natural enemies. In addition, he conducted research activities on the evaluation of the biological activity of volatile substances against insects (e.g., olfactometry, development of attractants/repellents) as well as on the evaluation of the entomotoxicity caused by substances with different origin and mechanism of action. Overall, Antonio collaborates on multidisciplinary research activities concerning: (i) the bio-ecology and interactions between invasive pests and co-evolved or non-co-evolved natural enemies; (ii) the potential of beneficial microorganisms against target and non-target species; (iii) the development and evaluation of novel biological control and/or IPM substances/techniques; (v) the lethal and sublethal effects of biological and synthetic insecticides against pests and beneficials; (vi) the role of volatile organic compounds in influencing insect behavior. Antonio serves as Editor and Peer Reviewer for several ISI journals. His scientific results have been or are being published mainly in international indexed scientific journals (WoS/Scopus).
