He graduated in Agricultural Sciences and Technologies in July 2006. From May 2008 to August 2009 he was a "research scholar" at the "United States Department of Agriculture - Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory, Madison, WI, USA ", developing a research on the bioconversion of herbaceous, perennial, lignocellulosic species for the production of second-generation bioethanol. In March 2010 he obtained the Ph.D. in "Agricultural Chemistry and Ecocompatibility" of the University of Catania.
His scientific activity has mainly focused on the study of food and biomass crops for energy and biofuels, analyzing aspects such as crop physiology, low input agricultural techniques, production and bioconversion technologies. Since 2007 he has been involved in several national and international research projects, also as a "work package leader", member of the "steering commitee" and "project manager".

Currently he is a researcher of the scientific sector AGR/02 at the section of Agronomy and Crop Science and teacher of the subject "Biomass crops for energy", at the master's degree course in Agricultural Sciences and Technologies of the Department of Agriculture, Food and Environment ( Di3A) of the University of Catania.

He has obtained the National Scientific Qualification (ASN) for the functions of associate professor for the field of competition 07/B1 - 07/B1 - Agronomia e Sistemi Colturali Erbacei ed Ortofloricoli, (art. 16, comma 1, Legge 240/10)  with validity from 4 April 2017 to 4 April 2023, and the National Scientific Qualification (ASN) for the functions of full professor for the field of competition 07/B1 - 07/B1 - Agronomia e Sistemi Colturali Erbacei ed Ortofloricoli, (art. 16, comma 1, Legge 240/10)  with validity from al 08 January 2020 to 08 January 2029.

Author of more than 100 scientific contributions, including 50 peer-review articles (WoS / SCOPUS), H-index 20 and 1020 citations (as of 22 July 2020).

“MAGIC – Marginal lands for Growing Industrial Crops: Turning a burden into an opportunity (H2020-RUR-2016-2017), coordinated by the Center for Renewable Energy Sources and Savings, Greece. In this 4-year project (July 2017-June 2021), he is co-WP leader, together with the Universiy of Hohenheim, Germany) of the WP4 - Low-input agricultural practices on selected industrial crops.

  • WP1. Development of an up-to-date industrial crops database (MAGIC-CROPS) and a decision support system tool (MAGIC-DSS), leader Università di Bologna, Italia;

  • Research agreement between TreeFree Biomass Solution Inc. (Seattle, USA) and the University of Catania with the Dipartimento di Agricoltura, Alimentazione e Ambiente, to introduce Arundo donax to continental environments of Europe (Poland and Slovakia).
  • Research agreement between Terravesta Ltd. (Lincoln, UK) and the University of Catania with the Dipartimento di Agricoltura, Alimentazione e Ambiente, to study floral biology, agronomy and breeding of Miscanthus spp. (2019).
  • Research agreement between DAIS SPA (Catania, Italy) and the University of Catania with the Dipartimento di Agricoltura, Alimentazione e Ambiente, to develop new baked products from traditional cerelas and landraces of wheat.
  • Research agreement between Terravesta Ltd. (Lincoln, UK) and the University of Catania with the Dipartimento di Agricoltura, Alimentazione e Ambiente, to study floral biology, agronomy and breeding of Miscanthus spp. (2020).

As project manager of projects with competitive calls

“OPTIMA – Optimization of Perennial Grasses for Biomass Production” (FP7-KBBE-2011-5) was a European funded project coordinated by the Dipartimento di Agricoltura, Alimentazione e Ambiente (Di3A), University of Catania. In this 4-year project (October 2011-September 2015), he was responsible on supporting the coordinator, and to supervise the scientific (114 deliverables) and administrative work (annual technical and financial reports) of 21 partners of the consortium. Furthermore, he was also in charge to interface with the project and financial manager of the European Commission.

“NARA – TraiNing on Agriculture and posthaRvest fruit and vegetables through sustainable best prActices” (Erasmus+ KA2 – Cooperation and Innovation for Good Practices), coordinated by the Parque Científico Tecnológico Fundación Aula Dei, Spain. In this 2-year project (31 December 2014 – 31 December 2016) he was responsible of developing didactic material of the package “soil, water and by-products” to finally deveop an e-learning platform for the University of Catania unit and to participate to the Steering Commitee.
