Giuseppe Antonio Di Vita

Associate Professor of Agricultural economics and rural appraisal [AGR/01]

Giuseppe Di Vita is an Associate Professor of Agricultural Economics and Rural Appraisal (AGR-01).

After completing his scientific high school diploma, he earned his five-year degree in Agricultural Sciences from the University of Palermo, with a final grade of 110/110. He carried out his thesis at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Agronómica y de Montes of the University of Cordoba (Spain) with the support of an Erasmus scholarship.

In 2001, he obtained a Ph.D. in Agri-food Economics from the University of Catania (1998-2001). During the same period, he conducted research as a visiting scholar at the Departamento de Economia y Ciencias Sociales Agrarias of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Spain) and collaborated on research projects with the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) in Madrid, Spain.

For over 15 years, he engaged in agri-food economics research as a scholarship holder, contractor, and research fellow at the Department of Agricultural Economic and Appraisal Sciences at the University of Catania, which later became the Department of Management of Agri-food and Environmental Systems (DiGeSA).

He served as a junior/senior researcher (2008-2009 and 2014-2015) in various research projects at the Regional Consortium for Applied Research and Experimentation (CORERAS) in Palermo. He collaborated with the National Institute of Agricultural Economics (INEA) for over ten years (2010-2015), which later became the Consortium for Agricultural Research (CREA) (2016-2017).

In 2018, he won a position as a Fixed-Term Researcher (RTDa) at the Department of Agricultural, Forestry, and Food Sciences at the University of Turin. During the same year, he became an Associate Professor of Agricultural Economics and Rural Appraisal (SSD AGR/01) at the same department at the University of Turin (2018-2023).

In 2023, after winning a competition as an Associate Professor of Agricultural Economics and Rural Appraisal at the University of Messina, he transferred to the Department of Agriculture, Food, and Environment (Di3A) at the University of Catania.

He currently teaches Environmental Economics at the University of Catania, having previously taught Economics and Business Management and Microeconomics at the University of Turin. He also delivered an advanced course titled "Evaluating Consumers' Preferences through Multi-Attributes Evaluation Approach: Theory and Practical Applications" aimed at Ph.D. students, post-docs, and researchers at the Slovak University of Agriculture, Faculty of Economics and Management, Nitra (Slovak Republic).

He is a lecturer in Ph.D. programs at the University of Catania and Messina and taught modules related to the SSD AGR/01 disciplines within university master's programs and numerous professional training courses funded by MIUR, FSE, and the Sicilian Regional Government.

Engaged in numerous national and international research projects, he has served on interim assessment committees for Ph.D. students and as an examiner for the final Ph.D. examinations in various cycles at the Universities of Turin, Catania, Federico II Naples, and the Mediterranean University of Reggio Calabria. He has also been a committee member for university competitions and examinations for the qualification as a Biotechnologist.

Currently, he holds the following roles: Supervisor of Master's Degree  in Agricultural Sciences and Technologies (LM-69), Director of the High School for Teacher Training at the University of Catania, Member of the Ph.D. Research College at the Department of Veterinary Sciences of University of Messina; President of the Libraries Committee of the Department of Agriculture, Food, and Environment (Di3A) at the University of Catania.

He is an ordinary member of the Italian Society of Agricultural Economics (SIDEA) and the European Association of Agricultural Economists (EAAE).

He is actively involved in scientific editorial activities, serving as an Associate Editor for the following journals: Frontiers in Nutrition, Sustainability, Open Agriculture, and a Member of the Editorial Board for the following journals: Annals of Agricultural and Crop Science (New Jersey, USA), Open Nutrition Journal (Sharjah, United Arab Emirates), Economia Agroalimentare/Food Economy, and Frontiers in Psychology. He is also a referee for numerous scientific journals, including European Review of Agricultural Economics, Ecological Economics, Meat Science, Journal of Cleaner Production, The Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, Sustainable Production and Consumption, International Journal of Hospitality Management, Journal of Food Science, LWT-Food Science and Technology, International Journal of Wine Business Research, and others.

He has received the following awards:

  • 2020 BEST PAPER AWARD for the best paper published in the journal "Economia agro-alimentare / Food Economy" in 2019.
  • BEST PAPER FINALIST at the 11th Wageningen International Conference on Chain and Network Management (WICaNeM 2014).
  • AWARD FOR THE BEST YOUNG RESEARCHER at Enometrics, Vineyard Data Quantification Society: "Enometrics XIX, Coimbra & Viseu (Portugal), May 30th - June 2nd, 2012.
