Learning Objectives

  • Acquisition of basic linguistic skills in English that will allow students to comunicate in every day English speaking situations, and exchange technical information related to their course of study.

Detailed Course Content

Lessons will be divided into Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing and Critical Thinking tasks.

Students will be asked to reflect upon the materials presented and respond to questions on a variety of topics found in the readings, videos and audios, in order to use and consolidate vocabulary.

Course content:

  1. Speaking e Critical Thinking activities and tasks: Reflecting on and talking about first impressions. Idiomatic expressions: “you don’t judge a book by its cover”. Vocabulary review: adjectives describing physical appearance, personality and character. Use of: looks, seems, looks like/seems like.
  2. Talking about yourself: introductions, hobbies, interests, favorite subjects, foods, etc.
  3. Listening activity - Information Food Technology - "A day in the life of a food scientist". (Video lesson)
  4. Food safety in the news: Madragora poisoning. (Ansa news)
  5. The English speaking world: "Columbus Day in the USA". (Video lesson)

  7. Young people in the UK: "The Parkour Generation". (Video lesson)
  8. Talking about free time: free time vocabulary and speaking practice

  11. Talking about history and culture: How have families changed? How has your family changed?
  12. Talking about the future: What are your future plans? Predictions for the future: Western versus Chinese astrology and horoscopes.
  13. Christmas around the world. Talking about Christmas traditions in other countries and in students' home towns. (Video lesson)
  14. New Year resolutions: talking about future intentions and self improvement.
  15. My home is my castle. Talking about "home".
