COSTRUZIONI PER L'AGRICOLTURA
Academic Year 2026/2027 - Teacher: SIMONA MARIA PORTOExpected Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and Understanding
The course aims to provide students with the fundamental technical knowledge concerning the construction, functional, and engineering aspects of the main agricultural buildings, including dairy cattle barns, calf housing facilities, crop protection structures. The course also provides students with the knowledge required to understand traditional rural buildings and the criteria for their conservation, restoration, and adaptive reuse, while respecting their original construction features and the landscape context in which they are located.
With reference to both the design of new agricultural buildings and the rehabilitation of existing ones, students will acquire an understanding of the main construction materials, functional layouts, equipment, and technical systems that contribute to improving the quality and quantity of agricultural production, workers' safety, and product hygiene. Concerning the relationship between buildings and the surrounding territory, the course provides students with the basic knowledge necessary to understand landscape components and the related requirements for their conservation and protection.
Applying Knowledge and Understanding
During the practical activities included in the course, students will acquire the ability to design agricultural buildings through the preparation of technical drawings developed using computer-aided design (CAD) software. In addition, they will learn to use GIS software to produce technical reports and analyses related to landscape components.
Making Judgements
During the practical activities, students will work in groups to develop a project assigned by the instructor concerning the design of an agricultural building. This activity will enable each group member to assess the project requirements on the basis of the information provided and to develop independent judgement regarding the selection of construction materials, functional solutions, equipment, and technical systems.
Within the group work setting, the proposals developed by individual members will be compared and critically discussed, thereby strengthening students' understanding of the theoretical concepts presented during the lectures and enhancing their ability to evaluate alternative design solutions.
Communication Skills
During the practical activities, students will be required to present and discuss the design solutions developed within their groups, using appropriate technical language and suitable graphical representations. These activities will foster the ability to communicate technical content, design choices, and the results of territorial and landscape analyses effectively to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.
Learning Skills
Upon completion of the course, students will have developed the ability to independently identify, access, and use technical standards, specialized manuals, scientific and technical documentation, and digital tools for the continuous updating of their knowledge in the field of agricultural buildings and rural construction.
Students will also be able to autonomously explore new construction materials, building technologies, technical systems, and GIS tools applied to territorial and landscape analysis, thereby acquiring the foundations necessary for further studies and lifelong professional development.
Course Structure
Lectures, ongoing written/oral tests, graphic design exercises, and technical visits.
If the course is taught in a blended or distance learning format, any necessary changes to the previously stated curriculum may be made in order to comply with the planned program and syllabus.
Assessment may also be conducted electronically, if circumstances require it.
To ensure equal opportunities and in compliance with applicable laws, interested students may request a personal interview to plan any compensatory and/or dispensatory measures, based on their learning objectives and specific needs.
Students may also contact the CInAP (Center for Active and Participatory Integration - Services for Disabilities and/or DSA) contact teacher in our Department, Professor Anna De Angelis.
Required Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of mathematics, physics, and technical drawing is required.
Teacher will conduct an entrance test to assess the opportunity to supplement the knowledge and skills needed to acquire the prerequisites through theoretical lectures and specifically structured exercises.
Attendance of Lessons
Attendance at lessons is strongly recommended.
