Module LANDSCAPE EVOLUTION AND CHARACTERIZATION

Expected Learning Outcomes

The course provides students with knowledge and tools to identify and understand the main components of the landscape, their relationships and the principal issues associated with its evolution over time. Particular attention is paid to the relationship between people and landscape throughout history, to traditional rural buildings and their relationship with the territory and with socio-cultural and use values, as well as to the natural and anthropogenic factors influencing the integration of new buildings and structures into the landscape context. The course also introduces the main approaches to landscape characterisation and the analysis of landscape transformations.

Knowledge and understanding

Knowledge and understanding of the main components of the landscape, their relationships and the issues associated with their evolution. Understanding of the relationship between people and landscape in different historical periods, as well as of the characteristics of traditional rural buildings and their relationship with the territory and landscape context. Knowledge of the main concepts and methods for landscape characterisation and the analysis of landscape transformations.

Applying knowledge and understanding

Ability to identify and analyse the main components of the landscape and their relationships, identifying issues arising from the abandonment and deterioration of traditional rural buildings. Ability to apply knowledge and methods of landscape characterisation to the analysis of specific cases, assessing the role of natural and anthropogenic factors in the integration of new buildings and structures into the landscape context.

Making judgements

Ability to critically assess landscape transformations and related issues by relating territorial characteristics, landscape components, forms of rural buildings and transformation processes. Ability to formulate well-founded assessments of the compatibility of new buildings and structures with the landscape context.

Communication skills

Ability to clearly and appropriately communicate and discuss analyses and interpretations concerning landscape characteristics and transformations, using appropriate technical terminology and engaging with different stakeholders, including in group activities and interdisciplinary work.

Learning skills

Ability to independently use knowledge and tools to further investigate landscape characterisation and the analysis of its evolution, integrating information on natural, anthropogenic and historical-cultural components and using approaches and methods specific to landscape studies.

Frontal teaching (28 hh), individual and group activities (28 hh). If measures to mitigate the impact of the pandemic should be incremented, lectures could be held online or in mixed mode.
