Learning Objectives

  • SOSTENIBILITA' DEL SISTEMA SUOLO

The course aims to provide the students the necessary tools for the comprehension of a sustainable soil management.

  • Sustainable animal production systems

The course deals with the study of the relationships between animal production systems, the environment and the territory. The aim is to provide the basic disciplinary knowledge useful for the identification of the sustainability indicators in animal production systems. Students acquire knowledge on the relationships between livestock activities and environmental resources: valorisation and protection or degradation of resources. At the end of the course, the student will have acquired specific knowledge of the animal production field functional to the planning of the rural territory.

Course Structure

  • SOSTENIBILITA' DEL SISTEMA SUOLO

The course is made of 28 hours of frontal lessons in which the student will acquire the basis notions on the aspects of soil fertility and plant nutrition.

Should teaching be carried out in mixed mode or remotely, it may be necessary to introduce changes with respect to previous statements, in line with the programme planned and outlined in the syllabus.

Learning assessment may also be carried out on line, should the conditions require it.

As a guarantee of equal opportunities and in compliance with current laws, interested students can ask for a personal interview in order to plan any compensatory and/or dispensatory measures, based on their specific needs and on teaching objectives of the discipline. It is also possible to ask the departmental contacts of CInAP (Center for Active and Participatory Integration - Services for Disabilities and/or DSAs).

  • Sustainable animal production systems

Lectures plus seminars and exercises (classroom and / or educational visits) held by the teacher or by experts on the subject.

If teaching will be be carried out in mixed mode or remotely, it may be necessary to introduce changes with respect to previous statements, in line with the programme planned and outlined in the syllabus.

Learning assessment may also be carried out on line, if the conditions require it.

Information for students with disabilities and/or Learning disorders. To guarantee equal opportunities and in accordance with the current laws, students can ask for a personal interview in order to plan any compensatory and/or dispensatory measures, based on the didactic objectives and specific needs. It is also possible to contact the CInAP (Center for Active and Participated Integration - Services for Disabilities and/or Learning disorders) of the Department, prof. Giovanna Tropea Garzia and prof. Anna De Angelis.

Detailed Course Content

  • SOSTENIBILITA' DEL SISTEMA SUOLO

Introduction. Soil genesis and evolution. Gas and liquid phase of the soil. Solid phases of the soil: inorganic and organic components. Organic matter: evolution and properties. Physical and morphological characteristics of the soil. Chemical properties of the soil: pH, anion and cation exchange. Soil fertility. Soil-root interactions: the rhizosphere. Radical absorption of water and ions. Nutritional needs of plants.

  • Sustainable animal production systems

The first part analyzes the context in which the topics of the course are framed and provides the basic knowledge to i) understand what a livestock system is, ii) distinguish the different forms of farming systems and iii) understand the interactions between animal husbandry, environment and territory.

The second part of the course explores the relationship between animal farming systems and land protection or environmental pollution; provides indications on the tools for mitigating environmental issues; identifies parameters and / or indicators useful for assessing sustainability in the different animal production systems.
