Learning Objectives

Students will acquire knowledge on the possibilities of application of bio-engineering techniques in relation to: soil conservation, hydraulic control of rivers; re-naturalization of degraded and / or contaminated sites (landfills, quarries, etc.), mitigation of the impacts due to the construction of particular infrastructures (roads, railways, etc.), environmental requalification of wet areas, de-pollution of rivers through phytodepuration and lagoon systems. In addition, students will acquire skills for designing bio-engineering interventions by using plants with particular reference to those techniques that can be applied in arid and semi-arid climates.

Detailed Course Content

Rivers control; evaluation of the solid and liquid flow of small watersheds. Sizing and design of longitudinal and transversal arrangement works; bio-engineering interventions for the arrangement of the riverbed and the banks. Reconstruction and fluvio-morphological redevelopment of rivers and wetlands. Use of bio-engineering techniques at the slope scale. Applications for recovery and conservation of coastal areas. Re-qualification and de-pollution of surface water bodies.
