ESTIMO E POLITICA AGRICOLA EUROPEA
Module Common Agricultural and Fisheries policies

Academic Year 2026/2027 - Teacher: GIOVANNI LA VIA

Expected Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding

Upon completion of the course, students will acquire knowledge and understanding of the principles, objectives, and instruments of the European Union’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), with particular reference to its historical evolution, institutional and regulatory framework, support mechanisms for the agricultural sector, and policies for rural development and sustainability. Students will also be able to understand the main interactions between the CAP and the European Union’s environmental, trade, territorial, and development policies, as well as the effects of agricultural policies on production systems and rural areas.

Applying Knowledge and Understanding

Students will be able to apply the knowledge acquired to the analysis of the main instruments of the CAP and their economic, social, environmental, and territorial effects. They will also be able to interpret European and national legislation and programming documents, analyse specific cases relating to agricultural and rural policies, and use relevant data and information to assess the implementation of agricultural policy measures in different territorial contexts.

Making Judgements

Students will develop the ability to critically analyse the objectives, instruments, and effects of the CAP, identifying opportunities, critical issues, and possible trade-offs between agricultural competitiveness, farm profitability, environmental protection, territorial cohesion, and sustainability. They will be able to formulate well-founded assessments of the consistency between policy instruments and agricultural policy objectives, based on an analysis of legislation, available data, and the scientific and economic literature.

Communication Skills

Students will acquire the ability to present the main issues of European agricultural policy clearly, rigorously, and appropriately, using relevant economic, legal, and institutional terminology. They will be able to present and discuss the results of analyses and case studies, both orally and through written assignments, graphs, and other means of presenting information, adapting their language to different types of audiences.

Learning Skills

Students will develop an autonomous learning methodology enabling them to deepen and update their knowledge of the evolution of the CAP and European Union policies. They will be able to independently identify, select, and interpret legislative sources, institutional documents, statistical data, and scientific contributions, acquiring the tools necessary to independently address the analysis of new issues and developments in the field of agricultural and rural policies.

Course Structure

The teaching methods include lectures, analysis of the constituent elements of developing an investment project, in-depth seminars, and coworking among students. In addition, teaching visits will be held.

As a guarantee of equal opportunities and in compliance with current laws, interested students can ask for a personal interview in order to plan any compensatory and/or dispensatory measures, based on their specific needs and on teaching objectives of the discipline.
