PRODUZIONI ANIMALI SOSTENIBILI
Module MANAGEMENT SOSTENIBILE DEGLI ALLEVAMENTI

Academic Year 2024/2025 - Teacher: MASSIMILIANO LANZA

Expected Learning Outcomes

The aim of the course is to deepen the knowledge of sustainable management methods of livestock farming.

Course Structure

The course will be organized in frontal teaching activities (3 CFU; no. hours: 21) through slides prepared by the teacher on the different topics of the program and practical activities (3 CFU; no. hours: 42) both in the classroom (problem solving approach, simulations by the use of Excel electronic spreadsheet, written tests, seminars), in the laboratory (analytical procedures applied to animal production) and in the field (technical visits to local production facilities).

If the teaching will be taught in mixed mode or remotely, the necessary changes may be introduced with respect to what was previously declared, in order to respect the planned program and reported in the syllabus.

To guarantee equal opportunities and in compliance with the laws in force, interested students can request a personal interview in order to plan any compensatory and/or dispensatory measures, based on the educational objectives and specific needs.

It is also possible to contact the CInAP (Centre for Active and Participated Integration - Services for Disabilities and/or DSA) referent teachers of the Di3A Department.

Required Prerequisites

Knowledge of basic disciplines of zootechnical interest.

Attendance of Lessons

Not mandatory but highly recommended.

Detailed Course Content

Management of small ruminants in Mediterranean areas: intake, animal load, feeding plans. Organic livestock farming: regulatory constraints and effects on quantitative-qualitative production. Alternative feed resources to conventional ones in animal feeding (by-products of the agri-food industry, alternative legumes seeds) and related effects on the quality of animal products. Outdoor pig farming techniques. Feeding strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) in ruminant farms. Animal welfare assessment through precision farming approach. Notes on analytical methods applicable in the sustainable animal production chain.

Learning Assessment

Learning Assessment Procedures

The learning assessment will be done through an oral exam on a topic covered in a powerpoint presented by the student integrated with questions on other topics of the program.

The evaluation of the student's preparation will be based on the following criteria: learning ability and level of depth of the topics covered, ability to summarize and present, and the student's reasoning ability.

The grading follows the following scheme:

Not suitable

Knowledge and understanding of the topic: Important deficiencies. Significant inaccuracies

Analysis and synthesis ability: Irrelevant. Frequent generalizations. Inability to summarize

Use of references: Completely inappropriate

18-20

Knowledge and understanding of the topic: At threshold level. Obvious imperfections

Analysis and synthesis ability: Barely sufficient ability

Use of references: Barely appropriate
