Learning Objectives

  • Sustainable management of animal production systems

    Aim of the course is to improve knowledge on the management of small ruminants and swine to guarantee sustainable production and high quality products

  • HYGIENE AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF ANIMAL FARMS

    To give knowledge on the problematic concerning hygiene in animal farms.To give knowledge on the means for preservation of animal health and welfare.Also to give knowledge on interaction between the animal production systems and the environment.


Detailed Course Content

  • Sustainable management of animal production systems

    Small ruminant management in Mediterranean areas: intake, herbage selection, pasture management, stocking rate. Organic animal husbandry. Use of local feeding sources (alternative legume seeds, agro-industrial by-products) in animal nutrition and relative effects on product quality. Traceability of feeding system in animal products. Swine husbandry in plein air. Spectrocolorimetric procedures to measure phenols and oxidative stability in animal products. Gas-chromatografic techniques to determine fatty acid composition in animal products, Dietary strategies to reduce GHG emissions in ruminants.

  • HYGIENE AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF ANIMAL FARMS

    Immunity and vaccine. The disinfection. Main diseases of cattle and sheep. Hygiene of the milk and meat production chain. Hygiene of the slaughter procedures. Animal welfare: heat stress; animal welfare during the transportation and at the slaughterhouse. Interaction between the animal production systems and the environment. Technical strategies to contrast the natural resources deterioration.
