Maria De Salvo is associate professor at the University of Catania, Department of Agriculture, Food and Environment. She is lecturer in "Real estate appraisal" and "Rural appraisal".
She graduated in Agri-food Economics at University of Catania and holds a master’s degree in “Agriculture Economics and Rural Policy” from the University on Naples "Federico II". She was visiting scholar at the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics (AREC), University of Maryland and at the Departament d`Economia Aplicada, Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona. She was research fellow for the University of Catania, the Universit of Trento, the University of Milano and tyhe University of Verona; and associate researcher fo the Fondazione ENI “Enrico Mattei” and the “RAAS - Risk assessment and adaptation strategies” division of the Centro Euro-Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici (CMCC). She has published in peer-reviewed journals. She active as academic referee in peer-review journals (Resource and Energy Economics, Forest Policy and Economics, Ecological Economics, Journal of Environmental Management, Environmental and Development Economics, Journal of Ecology and the Natural Environment, Aestimum, Agriculture e Rivista di Economia Agraria), and serves in the editorial board and as section editor in "Appraisal and rural economics" of the journal Aestimum (Centro Studi di Estimo e di Economia Territoriale - CeSET, Firenze University Press).

Her main area of research concerns the economic valuation of environmental and natural resources, with a particular focus on the methodological issues associated with discrete choice models. She has carried out research by applying non-market valuation techniques to valuing environmental policies within the field of natural resources and ecosystem services. More recently her main research interests include also methods to assess climate change impacts on agriculture, to analyse consumers' preferences, and to detect risk perception.
