The research activity is mainly focused on the topic of wastewater enhancement and sustainable reuse from small and medium-sized civil and agro-industrial settlements located in the inner areas of Sicily, like the Calatino, making use of natural treatment systems. Moreover, the research activity provides for the characterization and enhancement of biomass from natural treatment systems for energy, through anaerobic digestion, and as agricultural soil amendments.

In particular, the main research activities concern:

  • qualitative monitoring of wastewater (chemical-physical and microbiological analysis) by natural treatment systems according to regulatory limits for reuse and European guidelines;
  • evaluation of the availability of unconventional water resources and biomass for energy transformation in the inner areas of Calatino, through GIS tools and direct contacts with stakeholders;
  • characterization of microfitic and macrophyte biomass and evaluation of yield for energy enhancement.
