BUILDINGS AND LAND FOR ENOGASTRONOMY

Academic Year 2023/2024 - Teacher: SIMONA MARIA PORTO

Expected Learning Outcomes

Students will acquire knowledge on the design, distribution, technological and architectural aspects of buildings aimed at processing the main agricultural products, with particular attention paid to the traditional rural buildings. Moreovere, they will acquire knowledge on the tailored analysis tools to evaluate the landscape, its transformation over the years and the direct connection with rural buildings and their construction materials, in order to understand the role of design and quality of building materials on production activities within their territorial area.

In detail, students will be able to:

  • know the main construction materials, their respective physical properties and their several uses based on the different construction technologies;
  • know and evaluate the main technical and constructive characteristics of traditional rural buildings;
  • know the functional layouts of agro-industrial buildings, the main functional characteristics, with particular reference to winery buildings, by paying attention to the articulation of the interior spaces according to the needs of the production process.

The course aims to contribute at promoting sustainable development and competitiveness of the food and wine sector linked to the territory.

Course Structure

Frontal teaching (28 hh), individual and group activities (28 hh). If measures to mitigate the impact of the pandemic should be incremented, lectures could be held online or in mixed mode.

As a guarantee of equal opportunities and in compliance with current laws, interested students can ask for a personal interview in order to plan any compensatory and/or dispensatory measures, based on their specific needs and on teaching objectives of the discipline. It is also possible to ask the departmental contacts of CInAP (Center for Active and Participatory Integration - Services for Disabilities and/or DSAs), in the person of professor Anna De Angelis.

Detailed Course Content

TThe course is grouped into macro-modules as indicated below.

Introduction: The link between buildings and territory, the possibility of rehabilitating and reusing rural building and the preservation of the landscape.

Macromodule 1 “Drawing and Representation”: basic elements of technical drawing.

Macromodule 2a “Building Components”: different systems of building constructions, materials, structural system and building envelope. Methods for typological, functional and structural characterization of rural architecture. Traditional building materials: stone, wood, mortar, plaster, and concrete. Main architectural elements of traditional rural building: flat horizontal closures (basic floors, intermediate floors and roofs), curved horizontal closures (load-bearing structures and not load-bearing structures), slanting horizontal closures, load-bearing vertical closures and internal partition systems, stairs.

Macrmodule 2b “Traditional rural building”: Diagnosis of degradation and instability of traditional rural buildings. Consolidation of main architectural elements.

Macromodule 2c “Rural architecture”: Definition of rural architecture; Overview of the main types of traditional rural architecture. Methods for typological, functional and structural characterization of rural architecture.

Macromodule 3 “Building re-use and rehabilitation”: Overview on the egal framework for the rehabilitation and re-use of rural buildings, Methods and tools for determining the most adequate re-use which is compatible with the existing buildings and the local context in which they are located, example of suitable re-use compatible with the existing building.

Macromodule 4 “Landscape and rural building”: Background. Reference standards and the European Landscape Convention. The link landscape- territory; Landscape: anthropic and natural; the relationship man-landscape; the dynamic recovery of the traditional rural buildings; the landscape preservation.
